The I Iberoamerican Congress We Propose: Geography, Education and Citizenship will take place from September 7th to 12th, 2018 at the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning of the University of Lisbon.

With this Congress, it is intended to consolidate the network of those, teachers and researchers and students and collaborators who, in Ibero-American space, have built the Project We Proposed!, project that has emerged in Portugal and now is spreading worldwide throughout Spain, Brazil and more recently Colombia and Mozambique. This project, framed in the objectives of the GEOFORO-Ibero-American Forum of Education, Geography and Society, bets on the construction of a school committed to community and education for citizenship. Taking a learning construtivist approach, students are challenged to identify significant social and environmental problems, to carry out fieldwork on them and finally to present their proposals for intervention in order to fix those problems.

The diffusion of the Project We Proposed! demonstrates that it is possible to innovate a school still tied to the nationalist identification and the traditional memory practices that presided over the institutionalization of the systems of education in the 19th century. This Congress will help to deepen the theoretical reflection on the challenges posed to the Project We Proposed! in various quarters.

However, the Congress is not exhausted in the Project We Proposed! It opens to the participation of all those who, in geographical and educational production, have created citizen action as a great theoretical and methodological reference. Thus, contributions that value a socially committed performance on the territory and/or in the school are welcome.

In its organization, the Congress has some originalities. The first is the call for the participation of the students who make the Congress, possibly in collaboration with their teachers, to the meeting of the vocation of the Congress. On the other hand, bearing in mind that the Congress mobilizes many actors who, for the first time, are coming to Portugal, it is included an optional trip to Portugal, where they will contact students and teachers from different backgrounds who intervene locally in the Project and will be closed on September 12th, also with a final conference.

The registration costs are intended to cover only the costs associated with the event and the registration of students is free.

The I Ibero-American Congress We Propose: Geography, Education and Citizenship open to your citizen participation! Welcome to the Congress!
